Tint Limits
A complete guide to ensure you’re within the law of legal tint in GA
The metric that the law follows to determine tint legality is called VIsible Light Transmission, or “VLT”.
VLT is the percentage of visible light that passes through a window tint film and the glass combined.
The lower the VLT, the darker the window. So if a car window has a VLT of only 5%, that means its a very, very dark window that only allows 5% of visible light through. In contrast, if a car window is tinted with a VLT of 70%, that means its a very light tint and mostly transparent.

Chameleon Tint
Chameleon, or color-shifting tints, often have varying VLT levels due to their dynamic nature. If the VLT falls below the legal limit at any point, it would be considered non-compliant. Also, if the chameleon tint displays red or amber colors under certain conditions, it would violate state regulations.
Medical Exemptions
Georgia permits medical exemptions for individuals requiring additional UV protection by doctor’s orders, but the requirements are very specific.
- You must obtain a physician’s or optometrist’s certification detailing the medical necessity.
- Complete the official exemption application.
- Submit the application and certification to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
- Upon approval, carry the exemption certificate in your vehicle at all times.
